Top reasons why it is better to shop small and local
It's no surprise I am such a huge supporter of local and small businesses. That's where I got the inspiration for this website. It's so important whether it is supporting the local independent coffee shop or helping your friend by testing her make up etc. There's so many ways. If you know a small business that would like to expand and stock on this website please get in touch.
(The statistics on this blog are from America as they were easier to find. I will post about statistics here in the uk as soon as possible)
Although some ‘big’ businesses do provide great service, it is a known fact that overall, small businesses in your area provide not only better service, but customized service. A lot of the times, you will have the same person contacting you about what you are purchasing and they get to know you. This leads to better, customized service compared to a new customer service representative each time you call. This is especially important with children. If businesses are coming into my home and are around my children, I need to be able to trust them, even if I am standing beside them the entire time. With smaller businesses, it is easier to get to know the people that service your home, therefore, making you a bit more comfortable with them.
Not only will you get better service, but most of the time, you will get better products, as well. With big businesses, there are mass production plants and with smaller businesses, your products typically get hand crafted. The owner of the business always takes pride in the product, but when you have a line of people below the owner, the quality of the item begins to decrease because the workers do not always have the same love for the product – a lot of the time it is just a job to pay the bills. Now, this isn’t true for ALL big businesses, but I would bet that a majority of them are like this.
3.Improve the local economy
When you shopping local and promoting local businesses, they make more money and are able to hire new employees or raise the wages of current employees, which helps boost your local economy. Did you know that small businesses provide 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970’s? According to SBA (U.S. Small Business Administration), “Since 1990, as big business eliminated 4 million jobs, small businesses added 8 million new jobs.” I do not know about you, but I would love for my local economy to help support those statistics.
4.You feel great about who you are supporting
Like I mentioned before, you typically have the same few people that you talk to when you do business with small companies. With that being said, you know exactly where your money is going to and who you are supporting. I always feel better when I am supporting a family run business in my area because I know they are just doing their best to provide great service and products, while supporting their families.
